A person stands beside a large rusty metal hare sculpture in a grassy field under a clear blue sky, creating a serene outdoor scene.

Artist Marjan Wouda created the striking 3.6m steel sculpture “Sir Hare”, which stood tall outside Whitaker Museum in 2023. Locals and visitors alike fell in love with him - a bold, playful piece of public art that quickly became part of Rossendale’s identity.

When Sir Hare left Whitaker Park to go “on tour,” many were heartbroken. Residents called him “perfect for the park”, “beautiful lit up at night”, and even “a piece of public art that united the Valley.” That’s a lot of love for one big hare.

Now there’s an opportunity to bring him back. The proposal? To make Sir Hare the stunning centrepiece of Rawtenstall Town Square — a place where he could be enjoyed daily, snapped for Instagram, and cherished as a local landmark.

Public art isn’t just decoration. It’s memory, pride, and connection. For many, Sir Hare captured the spirit of Rossendale - rooted in creativity, community and a bit of boldness. Bringing him home would mean more than filling a space; it would mean celebrating who we are.
